The Big Boo Cast
Authors / speakers Melanie Shankle and Sophie Hudson - also known as Big Mama and BooMama on their blogs - talk about all the important stuff: faith, family, friends, football, fashion, and food. Plus, of course, their hair.

This is our last regular episode of 2019 (still more goodness to come this Sunday over on Patreon, though), and man oh man do we have ourselves some laughs. From how much we love Lane Kiffin's Twitter to the motivational speeches that we give our kids to our rage when people back into parking places (THE NERVE, I TELL YOU), it is good times aplenty on episode 165.

We also do a little reflecting on this past decade (so many changes!), and I share a v.v. important mascara tip that our friend Marti in Charlotte was kind enough to pass along for the good of the group. Plus, Melanie has a Netflix recommendation. So basically it's a win all the way around, and MERRY CHRISTMAS, EVERY ONE.

Enjoy, y'all!

It may not have been a banner football year for A&M and State, but that hasn't done much to diminish our collective BigBoo college football enthusiasm. Given that, you won't be surprised to hear us spend some time talking about last weekend's SEC Championship game as well as Ole Miss' recent head coaching hire. We realize that it might not be the expected reaction, but this Bulldog / Aggie combo is excited about Lane Kiffin's return to the SEC. I think you could even say that we are HERE FOR IT.

We also discuss what we love about Chipotle (yes. Chipotle.) along with our thoughts about cooked chicken. And if that weren't enough, Melanie has a new moisturizer to share with the group, not to mention that we have some general enthusiasm about the new season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as well as Nichole Nordeman's new Christmas album.

THIS IS ALL SO EXCITING.

Well, as you might imagine, we spend some time on this episode talking about this past weekend's Egg Bowl, which was as classic a State / Ole Miss match-up as I've ever seen. We also discuss the Iron Bowl, and you'd better believe we talk about the folks who found themselves imprisoned by the hedges at Jordan-Hare Stadium because that whole thing was nothing but a treasure.

There's more to this episode than college football, though. We also talk about movies and mascara (people surprised by this = 0 people). Plus, Melanie makes a case for why we all need to be adding eyelash serums to our beauty routines. I will commit to pray about it.

Enjoy, y'all!

Here's part two of our Christmas Gift Guide, and this round of gift suggestions is for women and men. Coming up with ideas for women was pretty easy, but when it came to presents for guys, I really tried to 1) think about what David and Alex might enjoy and 2) think like Perry and consider the life-giving value of effective illumination. I hope he'll be pleased.

You might be shocked to learn (eye roll) that there's some weird scratchy noise that appears from time to time in this episode, but we could not figure out what it was. Melanie wasn't in the bean bag chair, her hair was pulled back, and she wasn't wearing bracelets (there was a point when I was convinced the noise was bracelets). However, the up side is that her internet connection was flawless, so we'll take our victories where we can.

You can find all the links in the show notes below (there are affiliate links, just FYI), and we hope these ideas are helpful. We had the best time putting together these last two episodes, and now we're going to focus on preparing for our Thanksgiving festivities (or, as Melanie's family calls it, Shanksgiving). :-)

Happy Thanksgiving, y'all!

Well, it hardly seems possible, but lo, it is time for our annual Big Boo Holiday Gift Guide. It is understandable if you feel the need to applaud and perhaps even whistle.

I'm totally kidding. But man oh man it really is so fun to think about the holidays - especially since summer stretched into the final days of October.

You can find all the links in the show notes below (there are affiliate links, just FYI), and we hope this makes any shopping you do a little easier. We'll be back next week with some ideas for women and men - just in time for all of your Black Friday / Cyber Monday needs.

You might expect that all we're going to talk about on this episode is the LSU / Alabama game, but we might actually surprise you. I mean, of course we *do* talk about LSU / Alabama because HAVE YOU EVEN MET US, but we also discuss our air travel pet peeves, the initial rounds of the college football coaching carousel, and a cold front that has swept through Texas and Alabama.

And if all of that weren't enough, I have a couple of Hazel tales to tell, not to mention that Melanie has some TV and make-up recommendations for the good of the group.

So true story: we spend the first ten minutes of this episode talking about the raccoon that was in Melanie's chimney.

I feel like I may never get to write a sentence like that again.

Anyway, we talk about the raccoon, and we talk about Melanie and Caroline's recent trip to College Station. We also discuss the latest with my bathroom remodel, the latest with college football, and the latest with some coaches we have grown to admire over the years - complete with a Tender Hallmark Moment (TM) about Why Coaches Matter (and man oh man - do they ever matter).

Also, mark your calendars for our Christmas Gift Guide Episode the week of November 18th, and we'll have a special Christmas episode with our beloved Travis Cottrell on Patreon in early December.

In this episode we talk way more about high school football than college (no joke: this past Friday night was the most exciting high school football game of my adult life), and I'm so happy that we were able to actually have a podcast conversation about high school football, because that means Melanie's internet connection is working again. May the Lord be praised.

We also talk about some stuff that has happened on the internets over the course of the last week, the problem with the countertop on Melanie's island, Melanie's recent test drive of a hydro-facial, and some make-up that we have recently tried and enjoyed.

The Bulldogs and the Aggies didn't have an easy time of it this past weekend, but don't you worry: Melanie and I still have big fun recapping what we love about the LSU Tigers and analyzing the greatness of Nick Saban. We also discuss a recent situation where I was told I have angled cuticles, and yes, I realize that might be the strangest declaration I have made to date via this podcast.

In the second half of this episode we were absolutely plagued by disconnection problems, but the bright side of that is that we discovered the root of all of our sound issues. We appreciate your patience as you have had no choice but to join us on this perilous audio journey.

We also talk about a couple of products I've tried and enjoyed, and then we pretty much give up on being able to record anything else. Which is why I am delighted to have included about ten minutes of our most recent Patreon episode at the end of this one. NOW DIDN'T THAT ALL WORK OUT.

Listen. When Melanie and I started recording this episode, I was in a big ole post-birthday, post-Homecoming, please-someone-make-the-news-cycle-slightly-less-exhausting funk. Plus, we had eleventy hundred sound issues when we started trying to record, so in retrospect maybe I should have just called it a day and taken a 16-hour nap.

However, as it always tends to do, talking to Melanie eventually turned my frown upside down. I think it's the combination of hearing her talk about when lightning struck near their house and how the barista situation is going at C's school and her challenges at their recent family dove hunt and her glorious new mattress topper and the apparently bottomless pit that is contributing to a teenager's checking account.

So all that to say: funny friends are difference-makers, and aren't we all so grateful for that?

This past Saturday was a tough one for both of us football-wise (though to the Aggies' credit, they were victorious over the Razorbacks), so as you can imagine, we do some post-game processing on this episode. We also break down some of the better parts of our weekend and discuss why tile selection should be a required exercise for all couples in their pre-marital counseling.

Finally. You will be zero percent surprised to learn that there was a point where I accidentally stopped recording, which meant that poor Melanie had to listen to me tell a story for the second time, and then there were a couple of times where we had to step away from the computer for a minute or so for Very Urgent Matters of Great Urgency. So all that to say: we're just here to be as professional as possible. As always.

On this episode we chronicle Melanie's recent football heartache, we talk about our upcoming trip to Amarillo, and we break down some thoughts about the fact that the leopard print trend has arrived with authority and apparently intends to stay.

We also talk about the difficulty of persuading our eyes to wake up in the mornings, along with some potions and salves that are bringing Melanie some real hope. We didn't have what I would call a *hard* outline when we started recording this episode, but oh my goodness we had us some laughs. We talk about Caroline's first day of 11th grade and the fact that her school now has a coffee bar, we break down some of our thoughts about Southern Charm, and we get very tickled talking about Melanie's potential plans when it comes to cosmetic procedures.

We also discuss communication strategies with teenagers and some of our menu options now that our kids are back in school. You might notice that Melanie's hair brushes against the microphone a lot in this episode (we've since talked about it and secured a supply of hair ties for the next time we record), but all is forgiven because when we talk about skincare she makes up an entirely new word and uses it with authority.

This is all I could ever ask of my podcasting partner.

We kick off this episode with some awe and maybe a tiny bit of lamenting that our kids are officially licensed drivers, which is totally surreal but at least gives us opportunities to watch them swing and catch their keys a lot while they contemplate where they'd like to go next. As teenagers do.

We also talk about a few books I've read lately, some books Melanie is about to read, and some shows that have grabbed our attention. We have a lengthy discussion about this last season of The Real Housewives of New York City, and all I know to say about that is please don't judge us for having such sophisticated television taste.

Well, I might as well go ahead and tell you that my sound is weird on this episode. Surely you aren't surprised. And if nothing else it will be a nice throwback to Wolfman Jack's studio circa 1974.

By the way, you get all sorts of bonus points if you're up to speed on that Wolfman Jack reference.

Regardless of sound ish-ahs (for when-oh-when have those ever stopped us?), on this episode we recap our recent trip to Oklahoma and talk for a really long time about all the food we ate while we were there. It's sort of like listening to Bubba Gump talk about all the varieties of shrimp except we didn't actually eat any shrimp. We eventually work our way around to a brief discussion of Southern Charm as well as my thoughts about Spindrift Orange Mango sparkling water. It's all very thrilling.

This episode will also bring you one of the very best Melanie comments ever. In fact, it might be my favorite:

"I so enjoy just eating hot versions of cheese."

Not to be overly WOMP WOMP, but the first part of this episode is about as low-key as you'll ever hear us. That's because about 17-ish minutes after we started recording, we lost our connection, and the files with our audio disappeared right before our eyes. This is where we would love to blame the website we use to record, but the truth is we don't have any way of knowing exactly what happened. We just thought that our enthusiastic discussion about the InstantPot was lost in an internet graveyard forever.

So. We tried our best to rebound as we started recording all over again. It's safe to say we were weary.

BUT WAIT! Our sad tale has a redemptive arc!

After I started editing the WOMP WOMP part of the episode, I opened the website where we record. It was a fit of optimism, but I thought maybe - MAYBE - the audio would be there. And do you know what? IT WAS. So you'll hear Discouraged Us for the first 40-ish minutes, but then you'll hear Upbeat Us for the last 15 or so minutes, and DIDN'T THAT ALL WORK OUT AT LEAST SORT OF?

Hope y'all enjoy.

Our schedules haven't been super cooperative this week (painters! dogs! World Cup soccer!), so we were delighted to finally get to play a little podcast catch-up. We talk about the joys of car insurance costs for teenagers, the inspirational qualities of a Kardashian's refrigerator, our "Sunrise, Sunset" feelings about the pool, and our annoying ability to ignore problems we'd rather not address and/or solve.

We also discuss a clothing consignment option that has been a fantastic new discovery, and I discuss that in what is certainly far too much detail. As I tend to do.

Hope y'all enjoy!

So. Third time's the charm? Maybe?

We initially tried to record this episode a week ago, but my router got disconnected when we had painters at my house and, alas, there was no internet.

Then we recorded about four days ago, but something happened to the audio on Melanie's end, and alas, there was nothing to edit.

So today, once again, we attempted to record episode 143. We think we did it this time, so let this episode be a testimony to the Lord's strength in our weakness. :-) We talk about the College World Series (#HailState), a fun lunch I had at my house last week, and five things we're really enjoying this summer. Well, actually for me it was six things I'm enjoying this summer. I had a hard time narrowing down my list.

Hope y'all enjoy!

Well, if college baseball isn't your favorite topic, don't worry - because there's a point in this episode where we talk for over five minutes about what is causing the rustling noise in or around Melanie's microphone. It's every bit as riveting as you might imagine.

We also talk about Real Housewives, a new Netflix movie we enjoyed, our kids' summertime activities, and an ill-fated trial run with Snapchat.

Enjoy, y'all!

Well, it's finally SEC Baseball Tournament Week, but the excitement of the most well-run sporting event in America didn't stop us from recording a new episode (probably no one is more surprised by that than we are). As you might imagine, Melanie discusses a new addition to her skin care routine - and we recap several of the shows we've seen lately because apparently we have been watching a LOT of television to cope with the craziness of May.

We also express our (maybe) irrational frustrations with change, and when I say "change," I mean "coins."

Finally, you'll be delighted to know that we weigh in on the Game of Thrones finale even though neither of us has ever watched a single episode of the series.

Enjoy, y'all!

Well, we start off as Mamaw and MeMaw this week, here to tell you all about our failing eyesight, but eventually we return to some of our favorite topics: kids' activities, college baseball (at the time we recorded Mississippi State and A&M were about to play a weekend series), and the most wonderful sporting event of the year, the SEC Baseball Tournament.

We also talk about why we've avoided any sort of discussion about the current state of the Royal Family (stay tuned for a discussion about preciouslittleangel Archie sometime next week). Finally, we dig into whether Taylor Swift was inspired by Beyonce' or if she borrowed from Beyonce' - and then we go on and on about our very favorite sunscreen.

So you might say that we cover some content bases.

Enjoy, y'all!

We kick off this episode talking about pillows (yes. pillows.), then hear about Melanie and P's recent weekend of attending polo matches. AS YOU DO.

We also talk about one of my favorite nights of watching lacrosse and speculate about what it might be like when our kids graduate and we don't have the sports any more. Our conclusion is that we need to prepare ourselves for all the sadness.

Finally, we talk to our friend Lincee Ray about her new book that comes out April 30th - and we spend a significant amount of time talking about the ways we used to fold our notes in high school. It's a lost art, everyone.

Hope you enjoy!

A few days ago we asked the good people of Instagram if anyone had questions for us. And as it turned out, there were questions APLENTY. We spend the bulk of this episode digging into six or seven of those questions, which means we dig into the story of how we met, the reason only one of us records our ads, and the restaurants we love the mostest in Birmingham and San Antonio (also known as the cities where we live).

We also talk about what Melanie means (exactly) when she references "the ranch," and we tackle the question we get asked almost more than any other (besides how we met): what about that one-child situation? We laugh a lot, we answer lo, even more questions, and we recap (well, Mel does, at least) the latest with Britney Spears. Just as you might expect.

As always, please do enjoy.

Well, we didn't plan it, but on this episode we break down the Enneagram dynamics of our respective families, and OH, ARE WE EVER A STUDY. We also talk about the impressive amount of media we've consumed (no need to judge, everyone) as well as an exciting retail discovery that could very well CHANGE OUR WHOLE LIVES.

NOT TO BE OVERLY DRAMATIC.

On top of all that, we discuss the music we have in common with our kids and the necessity of training your toes to cooperate with wearing sandals again.

So once again the sound for me (Sophie) is horrible, so I am picking up on the subtle hint that perhaps I need a new microphone. WHY ARE YOU SURPRISED. But actually I don't need a new microphone because sound is fine on ads, just not when Melanie and I record. I don't even understand. WHO AMONG THEE IS TECH-Y?

Subpar audio aside, we thoroughly enjoyed catching up in this episode. We talk about college baseball, Melanie's newfound career as a stencil artist, Alex's 16th birthday, and How Is It Possible That Our Kids Are About To Drive. We also discuss an exciting (for Mel) new skincare option and how we're both a little socially awkward right now.

Full disclosure: the sound isn't great on this episode - it cuts in and out a lot and who could possibly know why because we do everything the same way every single time but for some reason this time I (Sophie) sound like a gravelly-voiced DJ from the 70s and WHATEVER, STUPID MICROPHONE - but despite the subpar sound, we had ourselves some fun. We discuss our deep lack of understanding re: taxes, we chronicle all the reasons we aren't cooking, and we discuss a couple of things we're really loving on Netflix.

Melanie also outlines some new decorative goals for Caroline's room, and we discuss our favorite means of social media procrastination when we're writing as well as our suggestions for better, more meaningful social media experiences. The sarcasm meter is running HIGH, y'all.

Enjoy, everybody!

We have such a treat for y'all in the first half of this episode: a visit with our dear friend Erin Moon, who regularly brightens our days on Instagram and on The Bible Binge podcast. Erin and I share an obsession related to one of our very favorite musicians, and it seemed like a good idea to have her on the podcast and hash that thing out for posterity.

The second half of this episode is a little bit of a catch-up for Melanie and me; we talk about some music I'm loving and a recipe from Melanie's friend Kim that has changed Alex Hudson's life forever. Melanie also shares her reactions to the Fyre documentary we talked about on the last episode, and she coins a new word that we are sure to hold close in our hearts forever.

Hope y'all enjoy!

This is the second part of the conversation we started on episode 130, and I have to say that this part is really of no substance at all (but oh, did we have fun).

We talk about a new product Melanie loves, an old product Melanie loves again, and my recent descent into a YouTube rabbit hole. We also discuss the books we're working on and actually settle on a title for mine even though we can't say a whole lot about it. So there's some mild vague-ery - but there are also laughs aplenty. It's a shorter-than-usual episode, but hopefully it packs a punch.

Well, as we often do, we spend a lot of time in this episode talking about our recent experiences in the wild and also the nature.

Okay. So it's not necessarily our norm. But we definitely discuss our somewhat out-of-the-ordinary weekend excursions. We also talk about some things we've watched and liked, some pants with which I am SMITTEN, and so very, very, very many sneakers - sneakers we like, sneakers we think we might like, and sneakers we appreciate though we would not wear them.

It's our first episode of 2019, and in it we certainly enjoy our fair share of pontificating: about age, about Christmas traditions (CAREFUL IF YOUR SMALL CHILDREN ARE LISTENING), about Melanie's exciting new ice option, and about the National Championship game.

We also talk about Melanie's repeat viewing of Friday Night Lights, hear her reaction to Tidying Up, and dig into ALL MY MANY THOUGHTS about Surviving R. Kelly (seriously - if talking about trauma is difficult for you, you'll want to skip this part of the episode). Finally, we come back around to some sunshine and break down a few of the reasons we loved (loved!) Mary Poppins Returns.

So. There's some silly stuff. There's some serious stuff. And there's a whole lot of in between.
