Travis is here! I feel like that's all we need to say about this episode, really. Because Travis being with us means that we talk about kids and sports and Christmas traditions and concession stand food and our favorite moments of 2018. Basically it's an hour (and change) of talking about everything and nothing with one of our very favorite friends. Enjoy, y'all - and Merry Christmas! So it's only been a few days since the last episode, but here's the second part of the conversation we started on episode 126. We jump straight into a discussion about skin care - which includes an update on some new methods we're trying and Melanie's evaluation of her new products from The Ordinary. It's the skincare deep end, and I think it's safe to say that it's one of our favorite places to be. We also talk about Melanie's recent trip to New England, what we've been watching over the last month, and why everyone needs to go to a Ben Rector concert. - Sunday Riley's CEO Moisturizer - Kate Somerville's Exfolikate - LilyAna Naturals Retinol Cream - the ordinary ascorbic acid 8% + alpha arbutin - grown alchemist hydra repair day cream - Hummingbird Farms Unscented Heavy Cream - the ordinary granactive 5% retinoid - the ordinary aha 30% peeling solution - Dumplin' Sponsors: - FabFitFun (promo code BIGBOO for $10 off your first subscription box) - care of (promo code BIGBOO for 25% off your first month of personalized care of vitamins) - Simple Contacts (promo code BIGBOO20 for $20 off) |

Real life has been FULL SPEED AHEAD the last few weeks; between traveling and speaking stuff and keeping up with our people, there hasn't been a lot of time for podcasting. So, this episode is part one of our Official Late November / Early December Catch-up. We talk about my most recent shopping trip with Martha, our respective Thanksgivings, and of course, our Bulldogs and our Aggies. Because I'm not sure if you're aware of it, but my Bulldogs won the Egg Bowl 35-3. And - just a guess - you're probably very aware that Melanie's Aggies beat LSU in a game FOR THE AGES, a seven overtime thriller in College Station. So, sit back and wrap some presents (or not) and drink some hot chocolate (or not) and prepare yourself for so many thoughts. Seriously. It's a lot of thoughts. Enjoy, y'all! We also do a quick recap of this past Saturday's football games because precious is the day when both the Aggies and the Bulldogs are victorious. I don't even know, y'all. Somehow in trying to correct something in 123 I deleted the last 10-ish minutes, which was our discussion about Jamie Golden's skincare routine. So please do follow Jamie on Instagram (@jamiebgolden), and please do forgive my besetting sin of not having a *super* strong understanding of Garage Band even though we've been podcasting since BEFORE THE DAWN OF TIME. HAPPY THANKSGIVING! |

All righty - you asked for it, and we aim to please, so here's part one of our 2018 Holiday Gift Guide. We had the best time rounding up ideas, and in this first installment, we focus on hostess gift options as well as gifts for teenage girls and guys. This means that I use my teenage girl voice at least four too many times. Anyway, we hope our suggestions are helpful (and fun!) (and also significantly reduce your shopping stress). As always, you can find links to everything in the show notes. Except for the rosemary tree from Lowe's and anything from Trader Joe's. Because Trader Joe's online shopping options = sad trombone. Be on the lookout for installment #2 (gifts for men and women) early next week. Enjoy, y'all! It took us three tries to get this episode going; we had a little recording trouble with the site we normally use, so then we had to switch over to Skype and blah blah blah we're the Bad News Bears of podcasting. Hi, welcome to the podcast, now watch us get hit in the chest by a fly ball. Or maybe a microphone. Eventually, though, we found us a work-around, and we settled in for a nice, long chat about all manner of things: the State / Bama game, Melanie's recent trip to Marshall, Texas, upcoming speaking stuff, and an update on the Camellia boots. We also discuss the struggle of my current no-shopping resolution and a few things that have inspired the fire out of me lately. And finally, we break down our friend Jamie Golden's recent skincare product recommendations that she shared on Instagram. It's safe to say that she shared what most would consider a wealth of knowledge, and we are grateful. Enjoy, y'all! In this episode there is a very strange crackle-y noise that occurs randomly but consistently, and we have no idea what it is. I suggested to Melanie at one point that it was castanets, but clearly I was being sarcastic because as you all know we only play our castanets during the summer months. I don't even know what that means. Anyway, if you can will yourself to hang in there during all the clicking / crackling, you'll hear us talk about the Mississippi State / A&M game, one of my most confident parenting moments, and Melanie's new beauty routine that involves cloth surgical tape. Y'all have no idea. It DELIGHTS me. Hope you enjoy! - Nick Fitzgerald's last touchdown against A&M - Sam Edelman Camellia boots (Melanie's jubilee!) - Aveeno Positively Radiant Overnight Hydrating Facial Moisturizer Sponsors: - FabFitFun (promo code BIGBOO for $10 off your first subscription box - and the fall box really is FAB) - Prep Dish (promo code BIGBOO for 2 weeks free) - Simple Contacts (promo code BIGBOO20 for $20 off your contacts) |

On this episode we talk about college football - specifically, the Bulldogs' misfortunes against LSU and the upcoming MSU / A&M match-up. We also discuss Harry and Meghan's baby news - along with their Australia trip. Besides that? Oh, just a couple of new strategies from Melanie in terms of fighting her sleep lines, and some serious over-thinking / over-emoting from Sophie in terms of how fast time seems to move these days. As the kids would say, we get all up in our feelings. You know who else would say that? BRIAN CHALMERS. Hope y'all enjoy! - Brian Chalmers' latest (thanks, @JennyDawnTX) - SEC Shorts - SEC teams get their mid-season report cards - QB1: Beyond the Lights (it's FANTASTIC) - The Syla - Meghan and Harry's Australia trip - The "portrait" in the glass carriage Sponsors: - RXBAR (promo code BIGBOO for 25% off their family pack) |

Well, if you have ever wanted to hear Melanie and me speculate about the source of a dog's cough, this is the episode for you. We also talk about college football, the relentless heat of early October, and our inability to keep up with teenagers' trends despite our best efforts. Parenting. It is humbling. Finally, we discuss the mystery of free radicals, and Melanie shares some exciting pajama leggings news. Hope y'all enjoy! - Poldark - "Tokyo" - Becoming Mrs. Lewis by Patti Callahan - Grown Alchemist Hydra-repair day cream - Aerie play pocket and cuff leggings Sponsors: - Prep Dish (promo code BIGBOO for 2 weeks free) - FabFitFun (promo code BIGBOO for $10 off your first subscription box) - Casper (promo code BIGBOO for $50 off select mattresses; terms & conditions apply) |

There's a point in every college football season (at least for Aggies and Bulldogs) when disappointment, at least for a few minutes, obscures hope. Melanie and I found ourselves re-acquainted with some disappointment this past weekend, which definitely wasn't what we dreamed it would be. We break down all those feelings on this episode - along with continued analysis of targeting calls and the increasingly lose interpretation of roughing the passer. We also talk about the realities of traveling out of town for a speaking engagement, the joys of high school football games, and our practices regarding one-star book reviews. Also: books and fall fashion finds! Please do enjoy. - How to Tackle a Quarterback 2018 - The evolution of roughing the passer - My Oxford Year by Julia Whelan (just FYI, friends - this is not a book about a covenant relationship) - This Must Be the Place by Maggie O'Farrell - Universal Thread Lanae scrunch boots - Abercrombie textured open front cardigan - George Men's Short Sleeve Elongated Slub Hoodie Sponsors: - Prep Dish (promo code BIGBOO for 2 weeks free) - Poshmark (get the app and use the promo code BIGBOO for $5 off your first order) - Simple Contacts (promo code BIGBOO20 for $20 off your first order) - FabFitFun (promo code BIGBOO for $10 off your first subscription box - and the fall box really is FAB!) |

Since Melanie and I went to Chicago last weekend, this episode seemed like a great opportunity to recap our trip. We talk about our unforeseen hotel challenges, our night at Hamilton, and our many, many laughs at The Popcast Live. We also discuss college football at great length - and ponder the dynamics of sliding into someone's social media comments with your team's catchphrase. Also, you will not be surprised to know that Melanie has a LOT of thoughts about Aggie football in general and Jimbo Fisher in particular. Hope y'all enjoy! Well, you will not be surprised to learn that we talk a great deal - A GREAT DEAL - about college football in this episode. There's some accountability in terms of how one of us managed to go to Starkville this past weekend despite some seemingly overwhelming writing obligations, there's all manner of optimism since the Aggies and the Bulldogs combined to score over 100 points in their first games, and then there's the can't-deny-it reality that the SEC West is NO JOKE in 2018. We also discuss books and shows and our upcoming trip to Chicago. Which reminds me: we even tell you how to win two free tickets to The Popcast Live Show (this Saturday, September 8th), but HURRY - you have to leave a comment on our podcast Facebook page by 10AM central on Thursday, September 6th in order to be in the drawing. As you (might) know, I'm working with a different computer these days, and somewhere in this new-to-me version of Garage Band (which is what I use to edit) I have somehow changed myself to a setting that is likely called "DJ From The 1970s." Melanie sounds quite normal, but I have an echo that will take you straight to the disco, and I have no idea how to fix it. I just know that it makes me sound like I recorded my part of the episode in a tiled bathroom. WELCOME TO EXCELLENCE, everyone. Despite the reverb, though, we plow our way through some topics. We talk about the heat (what? you're surprised?), we talk about SEC football, we talk about recent annoyances, and we delve into some strong feelings that we didn't even know we had. Please do enjoy. Here's where you can get more info on the stuff / products / places we mention: - Sophie's car on the way to senior retreat - Mississippi State players learning the fight song - 10 things you might not know about Alabama Coach Nick Saban - Stonewall Kitchen Apple Grille Sauce SPONSORS: - KIND Kids Bars (promo code BOOCAST for 20% off your first order) - PrepDish (promo code BIGBOO for 2 weeks free) - Simple Contacts (promo code BIGBOO20 for 20% off your first order) |

It's been a couple of weeks, so Melanie and I play catch-up in this episode. We talk about a unique challenge I'm facing this weekend, the technological heartbreak of late last week, and why a pep talk from other writers is a very sweet thing indeed. We also talk about the launch of Melanie's new book, Fearless Faith, and discuss this fall's fashion trends (or lack thereof). We also mourn the continued elusiveness of Melanie's much-desired Sam Edelman Camellia boots, so we trust you'll remember her in your prayers. Enjoy, y'all! - Fearless Faith - Melanie's brand-new devotional book for girls - Universal Studios (one of Sophie's favorite places on earth) - The Popcast Live in Chicago with Knox and Jamie (come see us!) - Erin Moon's tabbed Hamilton spreadsheet Sponsors: - PrepDish - Simple Contacts (promo code BIGBOO for $20 off your first order) - Casper (promo code BIGBOO for $50 off select mattresses) |

Well, our good friend Travis Cottrell is back with us this week, and oh, do we have a fine time. However, since y'all know how we like to pride ourselves on technological excellence, you might as well be aware that apparently my microphone wasn't completely plugged in for this episode. So be forewarned that I sound considerably more tin-ny than normal. DO NOT BE DISCOURAGED, however, because Melanie and Travis managed to get their microphones connected and it all works out fine in the end. On this episode we talk about our sleeping preferences (pillows, comforter weight, side of bed, etc.) and prove once and for all that Melanie and I are not low-maintenance individuals. Melanie also shares her surefire method for hacking hotel thermostats, and my enthusiasm for this bit of information probably reveals more about me than I'd like. We also answer more of your questions and cover a whole lot of conversational ground (you have never seen three people agonize more over their hypothetical guests to a hypothetical dinner party than we do). Plus, Neil Diamond shows up. Please do enjoy. Here's where you can get more info on the stuff / products / places we mention:

Our good friend Travis Cottrell is with us on this episode, and we have ourselves a blast. We talk about workout needs of extroverts vs. introverts, we hear about Travis' recent regional airline experience, and we answer a bunch of fun questions that people asked on Instagram. Also, please excuse the many phone alerts / dings / beeps that occur in the first part of the episode. We didn't get our phones under control before we started to record, so it takes a few minutes for all three of us to SILENCIO LOS TELEFONOS. We trust this is the level of professionalism to which you've grown accustomed. All righty, y'all - this is our Very Special <em>Southern Charm</em> Finale Re-cap. We talk about so many things: Craig, Kathryn & Shep, white tie attire, Patricia's pet caftans, Chelsea & Austen, and last but not least - the train wreck that is Ashley and Thomas. WE HAVE SOME THOUGHTS. And then, after we wrap up our Southern Charm discussion, we talk about several other shows we're watching and enjoying / pondering. Yay for TV! Enjoy, y'all! - The Entire Real Housewives Franchise (the guiltiest of guilty TV pleasures) - The Staircase (this is a true crime documentary - not for kids - difficult to watch in parts) - Get Me Roger Stone (there's bad language - but an interesting, if disheartening, look at political campaign strategy) - I Am Not Your Guru (there's bad language - but fascinating from the perspective of people in search of emotional / spiritual freedom through self-help) - The Handmaid's Tale (read up on this one before you watch...because of the subject matter it is not for everyone and definitely not for kids or young teenagers) - Closing Song 1 and Closing Song 2 Sponsors: - FabFitFun (use promo code BIGBOO for $10 off your first subscription box) - Casper (use promo code BIGBOO for $50 off select mattresses; terms & conditions apply) - PrepDish (use promo code BIGBOO for 2 free weeks!) |

On this episode we talk about my unusually quiet house, the latest on Southern Charm, and a couple of Netflix movies that have renewed Melanie's faith in the romantic comedy. We also continue with the questions we didn't finish last week, and as it turns out, we talk a lot - A LOT - about parenting stuff (teenagers in general, only children in particular). You'll also hear all of my (Sophie's) geeky thoughts about The Fourth Estate as well as some podcasts I'm enjoying. Let it be acknowledged that we do not discuss a single item of clothing or a single beauty product on this episode. Somebody call the medics. Enjoy, y'all! A few days ago some of the folks on our Big Boo Facebook page were kind enough to leave comments with some questions / topics that they wanted us to discuss, so that is exactly what Melanie and I do on this episode. We picked seven to start with, and my goodness: WE HAVE SOME THOUGHTS. I actually couldn't fit all of the answers into one episode (you'll hear the rest next week), but we cover a lot of territory when it comes to grief, friendships, writing, and whether or not we enjoy crafts (we'll take "NO" for $400, Alex). This episode is maybe a little extra personal, but we loved getting to talk about this stuff. Hope y'all enjoy! Here's where you can get more info on the stuff / products / places we mention: - "Old Friends" by Ben Rector (we don't mention it specifically - but it's fitting considering what we say about friendship) - "Caroline's" shoe box Fiesta floats - Carpool Karaoke with Paul McCartney (we don't talk about this at all, but it's so heartwarming and will totally brighten your day) - Our new Big Boo Cast t-shirts from Milk and Honey Tees! In what is no doubt the complete opposite of a surprise, we had some sound issues with this one. We still don't know exactly why. What we do know, though, is that I sound like a loud talker and Melanie sounds like a soft talker who is trying to subtly communicate to me that I need to PIPE DOWN. So thanks in advance for bearing with us; we'll do our best to get that worked out for next time. As for what we talk about, well, there's a lot: college baseball (Mississippi State is headed to the College World Series!), a new show Melanie really likes, famous people we follow on Instagram, some new music I'm excited about, and a few new skincare / make-up finds. So basically, you know, some of our favorite topics. Hope y'all enjoy! We spend considerable time on this episode breaking down all the fun we had at The Popcast Live! Show (Melanie) and The Happy Hour Live (Sophie), and then somehow we manage to segue into a discussion about McDonald's chicken options, a topic that we feel certain we have never before covered. We also (apparently) have A LOT OF THOUGHTS about this season of Southern Charm. So whether you watch or not, you're going to get yourself a little bit of a Southern Charm education. And even if reality television isn't your thing, never fear, because this is the episode where Melanie recounts a magical encounter she once had with a McGriddle, and let me just assure you that we'll all be better for it. You'll be delighted (or not) to know that on this episode of the podcast we first discuss our respective struggles with our ongoing coughs. This is due to our combined age of 402. We also talk maybe a little too enthusiastically about the new royal baby (WE HAVE SOME THEORIES) before we spend some time revisiting Hazel's ACL situation. We also continue our pop culture discussion and dig into some exciting new beauty products that Melanie has tried (or is planning to try). As an added bonus, you will hear me grow increasingly hoarse over the course of the episode because we are all about that real upper respiratory infection life, y'all. Hope you enjoy! We kick off this episode with an update on Hazel (as Sophie's mama would have said: "God love her") and then segue' into a discussion about our new favorite clothing store that we had almost forgotten about (credit to Melanie, of course, for the re-discovery). Then, like we threatened to do on the last couple of episodes, we talk about some of the pop culture influences that we loved when we were younger. Also. It probably goes without saying that we don't know what to think about our current level of podcast productivity. We would like to think that we'll continue to be consistent and won't take a random two-month break at some point, but, well, you know us. So it's probably wise for all of us to keep our expectations in check. Hope y'all enjoy episode 102! Some of you may know that Mississippi State lost the NCAA Women's Basketball National Championship thanks to an incredible last-second shot by Notre Dame, so in the first part of episode 101, Melanie and I take some time to walk through some of the post-game emotions I felt last week in Columbus, OH. We also talk about our spring fashion frustrations, and I may or may not have called a cold-shoulder top the mullet of shirts (I don't know that my assessment is original, but I can assure you that it is heartfelt). The most exciting news on this episode is that Melanie's new devotional book, Everyday Holy, comes out on Tuesday, April 10th, and IT. IS. BEAUTIFUL. See? It is lovely. Anyway, we talk through the writing process for a devotional book and get a little nerdy about that thing. Then we talk about writing trade books and get a little nerdy about that thing. And then we talk about what's going on with our kids and sports and lo, even some summer plans. Hope y'all enjoy it! Well, well, well. This is our 100th episode of The Big Boo Cast, and it only took us 11-ish years to get to this point. Try not to be overwhelmed by our frenzied pace. Anyway, on this episode we talk about Spring Break travels, our sassy new podcast t-shirt, and a few new beauty favorites. There are also several moments where we laugh until we wheeze. So, you know, pretty much the usual. Thanks so much for being such faithful listeners, everybody. You're the best! Hope you enjoy episode 100! This is part two of our recent conversation with our funny, wise, loves-him-some-80's-music friend, Travis Cottrell. After we wrapped up lo, all of our many thoughts about 80's songs, we moved into some serious reminiscing (at least from Melanie and me) about the country music of the early 90s. And then we talked about at least twenty more artists / songs that filled our 20s with love and happiness and all manner of wonderful memories. You can find links to those playlists in the show notes. We also got to ask Travis some questions about recording his latest worship album, The Reason, and we had the best time listening to him talk about that process. There's also a moment where all three of us demonstrated some significant affection for Popeye's, and really, this should be no surprise at all. Up next: episode 100! Thanks for listening, everybody. As you can imagine, Melanie and I were delighted to have our good friend Travis Cottrell join us on Episode 98. We caught up on life in general - what's been going on with our kids, spring sports, Travis' feelings about the reboot of American Idol - and we also talked a little about Travis' FANTASTIC new worship album, The Reason. More than anything else, though, we enjoyed the fire out of a discussion about music from the 70s and 80s. It was a musical memory lane to beat the band (see what I did there)? It was so in-depth, in fact, that I finally decided to make a playlist of (almost) everything we mentioned (WHY isn't "And When She Danced" from Stealing Home available on any sort of streaming service, I ask you?). All that to say: we had a blast talking with Travis - so much so that there will be a part 2 posted in the next few days. Hope y'all enjoy it! Well, episode 97 is really a continuation of episode 96, and I even thought about calling it episode 96.5, but WHATEVER EVERYBODY WE ARE SO CLOSE TO 100 AND I WILL TAKE EVERY NUMBER I CAN GET. Therefore comma I am embracing episode NINETY-SEVEN with everything I have. SO, here's what's happening this go 'round. Melanie and I continue our discussion of every day favorites (makeup remover! K-cups! and other exciting items!). Then our oh-so-funny friend Jamie Golden jumps in with some serious, life-giving wisdom about shopping at Sephora. And I know I mentioned this last week, but I'll mention it again: Jamie co-hosts The Popcast and The Bible Binge with Knox McCoy. She is one of the funniest people alive at this present time in American history and basically Melanie and I would listen to her read the phone book for infinity. Even better, though, is that talking to me makes Jamie's Southern accent way more pronounced, and that has blessed my actual heart every time I've listened. And I've listened a lot because for some reason this episode took me eleventy thousand hours to edit. I hope you feel that it was worth it. :-) Enjoy, y'all! This episode is the first of a two-part series, which all sounds very fancy until you realize that it's actually not fancy even a little bit. But here's what happened: first we talked about Melanie's car troubles and my new simple suppers plan. Then Melanie and I had a *very* lengthy discussion about some of our everyday favorites (coffee, running shoes, Mexican entrees, etc.), and since we talked for a sweet forever (not to mention that we wanted to keep the show notes at least a smidge shorter than a novel), we decided to break the favorites discussion into two episodes. BUT - since we didn't want these next two episodes to be shorter than what you're used to, we're offering a little bonus content in episodes 96 and 97: interviews with two of our favorite (and funny) podcast-y people. SO, here's how that will play out in this very special episode 96. For about 45 minutes (-ish) you'll hear Melanie and me talk about all manner of favorites, and for another 20 minutes (-ish) you'll hear me talking with our hilarious, brilliant friend Jamie Golden. As many of you know, Jamie co-hosts The Popcast and (new podcast alert!) The Bible Binge with Knox McCoy. Jamie is a delight and a joy and it was the biggest blast to get to ask her some questions and then laugh at her answers. Anyway, I know that was a whole lot of explanation, so all that to say: episode 96 is a little bit different - but it's a good different. Not a long-term different. Just a two-episode different (episode 97 will come out in a few days - just FYI). Enjoy, y'all! I don't even know what to tell y'all about Episode 95, so how about some fun facts? Number of times we thought we'd worked out a time to record it: approximately 14. Number of times we actually recorded it: 2. Number of times we were able to retrieve the files after we recorded: 1. Number of times I wondered if we would ever complete Episode 95: at least 20. Number of times teenagers' sports commitments forced us to re-schedule: 6. Number of times Melanie and I cleared our throats when we recorded this episode: 784. Number of times I edited out the sound of throat-clearing: 784. All that to say: it was a long road. But in the end, we got 'er done. And we had a fine time talking about the Olympics and Black Panther and Valentine's Day and why we all need to relax about the number of children people do or don't have. Hope y'all enjoy! Maybe the most important aspect of this episode is that Melanie has some very exciting news about her eyelashes. And honestly, why would any of us care about any other topic when clearly there have been some VERY IMPORTANT eyelash developments since the last episode? We do, however, talk about a bunch of stuff before we get to the eyelashes. We answer some of your questions about marriage and parenting (keep in mind that the verdict is still out on whether we have the foggiest idea what we're talking about re: parenting), and we also dig into a little discussion about body image (FOR SURE a first for us). Then we segue' into, you know, eyelashes and hair and the fact that one of us has paralyzing fear of repetitive circles. AS YOU DO. Enjoy, y'all! Well, for the first half of this episode Melanie and I talk about movies and TV, and for a big chunk of the second half of this episode, we talk about marriage. Yes. I know. MARRIAGE. Which we hardly ever talk about in any sort of detail. But we have us a fine conversation about it right here on episode 93. We also discuss our new favorite music and an outstanding list of Amazon products that Melanie discovered, so go ahead and prepare yourself to travel down that rabbit hole for a few hours after you listen. Well, it's our first episode of 2018, and true to form, we're all over the place. We analyze Hazel's behavior during Christmas break, we marvel at the fact that Melanie is smitten with a real-live musical (The Greatest Showman), and we decide we like Bruno Mars' new single more than Justin Timberlake's. As you do. We also talk college football (WHO IS SURPRISED) and compare Melanie's commitment to information about the Royal Family to my commitment to information that I find on Twitter (we'll have to explain that in greater detail on another podcast, but suffice it to say that I love me some current events). Melanie also has a new hair product to share with us, and I totally ordered said product while we were recording because this, THIS IS WHAT I DO. Enjoy, everybody! Here's where you can get more info on the stuff / products / places we mention: Home Again - Reese Witherspoon The Greatest Showman (and Sophie has watched this clip from TGS workshop about 358 times in the last two days) Bruno Mars' "Finesse" (there's a little bit of language - just FYI) The Royal House of Windsor on Netflix Kerastase VIP Volume in Powder Backcomb Effect Finishing Spray Jennifer Fulwiler's One Beautiful Dream
