The Big Boo Cast
Two mama-bloggers, Big Mama and BooMama, talk about all the important stuff: faith, family, friends, fashion and food. Plus, of course, our hair.

I will warn you that we talk about our dogs a whole lot on this one.

We also talk about Melanie's far-reaching knowledge about back pain, Christy Nockels' upcoming worship concert, our nostalgia for the 70s, decorating for Christmas, college football, coaching searches, TV, and who knows what else.

Let me put it this way: when I texted Mel to tell her that the podcast ended up being over 50 minutes, she said, "That's a whole lot of nothin'."

And to that I say "amen."

Enjoy, y'all!

Well, I can pretty much sum up this episode in two words: SEC football.

Oh, we talk about a few other things - dresses, booties (THE SHOES), corduroys, our new books - but mostly we talk about SEC football. And the SEC coaches' wives show on SEC Network. And the most miniscule details contained within the coaches' wives show because apparently I am a little obsessed.

Also, Melanie's t-shirt kept rubbing aganist the chair where she was sitting, and I may have mentioned it once or four times. But it's a lot of football, a lot of laughing, and a little bit of comforting Melanie because OH, AGGIES. Her hopes were so high.

Enjoy, y'all!

Considering that this is our first podcast of the 2014 college football season, it's really no wonder that we spend a chunk of time talking about, well, college football.

However, it might be a wonder that we manage to talk about anything else. Sure enough, though, we covered Melanie's bathroom remodel, the fact that I finally fnished my book, the latest developments with our eyelashes, the joys of 40-something eyesight, and some recent beauty product finds.

So basically we're solving all the world's most important problems.

Enjoy, y'all!

Well, I know that I'm in the middle of a big ole bloggy break, but Melanie and I have been wanting to record a podcast, and the day before our friend Annie's new book comes out seemed like a fine and wonderful time.

Here's the cover of Annie's book. I love it a lot.

Annie and I have a delightful chat about 10 minutes into the podcast. Melanie was supposed to be part of that, but unfortunately we (and by "we," I mean "I") could not figure out how to record the three of us at once now that I'm using different software than I did back in the days of FryDaddy.

SO - Mel and I talked a little, then Annie and I talked, then Mel and I talked a bunch more. We extensively examined the beach house vs. lake house debate, our favorite summertime foods, the perils of trying to have grown-up conversations when kids are listening, and, of course, our dogs.

Also, please excuse the awkward sound effect transition that I used at the beginning and the end of the part with Annie. Just know that I did the best I could with an impromptu back-up plan and very limited technical skills.

If I can ever finish this book, I may need to consider signing up to take some sort of online podcasting seminar. I feel like that would be good for all of us.

Bless.

Well, the big news in this particular podcast is that Melanie thinks our dogs could possibly be related. It's a long shot - but it's a shot. We actually spend way too much time talking about our beloved little pups, and Hazel barks at random intervals to make her presence known.

Other than that, there's nothing new under the sun, really. We talk about TV and books and sunscreen and our hair. We also share our feelings about sunglasses and marvel about the fact that we've been recording podcasts for SEVEN YEARS.

I'll tell you what: seven years is a long time to talk about nothing.

Hope y'all enjoy!

Well, I'd planned to get this podcast up last night, but State's baseball game with Georgia went to 10 innings, and by the time it was over (after 11pm, mind you), my nerves were far too frazzled to do any sort of editing and uploading and etc. I had to start a new book just to wind down and have any hope of falling asleep, and yes, I'm all too aware that I have some co-dependency issues when it comes to the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

ANYWAY.

This podcast is hodgepodge (well, let's be honest - all of them are), and we cover a big ole variety of unrelated topics: my incessant cough, Melanie's home improvement goals, the end of school, and my new job as a personal assistant to an 11 year-old. It was all good times and big fun.

Hope y'all enjoy it!

I just listened to this episode before I uploaded it, and doing that made me realize that Melanie and I had a guest co-host this week that we failed to mention: THE POLLEN. Oh my goodness. I cough, Alex coughs, I sniff, Alex coughs, I take sip after sip of Crystal Light to try to soothe my throat, and then Alex coughs some more. So basically the whole podcast is like waiting with a child in the sick room of a peditrician's office. I'm just as sorry as I can be about that, but the pine pollen is just about more than we can stand right now. At least I didn't resort to using Flonase or a Neti pot at any point in the proceedings.

As usual, we talk about many unrelated things: Melanie's new career as a mom DJ / choreographer, my weekend in Oklahoma, my quest for a new spring purse, Mel's fancy dinner this past Saturday night, my exciting MSU baseball-related achievement, the season premiere of Mad Men, and a bunch of other stuff that I can't remember. But by all means, if you'd like to shop with us as we look at purses, click on over to the Noonday bags page; we talk about these purses for a solid 10 minutes.

Hope y'all enjoy!

Well, David walked in the room while I was editing this one, and after he listened for a few seconds, he said, "Saving the world - one podcast at a time."

I trust that you can detect his sarcasm.

It's the same ole same ole this go 'round; we talk about sleep habits and shoes and TV and skirts and Gap and travel and all sorts of other riveting topics.

Shockingly, we do not talk about our hair, nor do we talk about mascara. This might be a sign of the end times, but don't quote me on that.

Hope y'all enjoy it!

We started this particular podcast with some unexpected technical issues, but somehow we managed to recover. I give all the credit to the Lord and the fancy new podcasting microphone that I got for Christmas.

(I'm not sure that there's anything that has ever cemented my FULL-ON NERD status like the fact that I am just as tickled as I can be that I got a new podcasting microphone for Christmas.)

(I told Melanie that it made me feel like I was Loretta Lynn in the recording studio back in the 1950s.)

This time around we talk about clothes, homework, TV, desks, and some other riveting topics. At the end of the podcast Melanie gets some very exciting news, and I'm fairly certain that I overreact. But I overreact when Ranch dressing goes on sale, so please know that my SURGE OF ENTHUSIASM is totally true to my character.

Enjoy, y'all!

Well, I would welcome you to our annual Christmas podcast - except I don't think Melanie and I have actually recorded a Christmas podcast in about five years. We are far too fond of flying by the seat of our collective pants to plan anything in advance, much less to commit to it on a yearly basis. We like to tell ourselves this is part of our charm, but it's actually probably a little annoying.

This time around we talk about a bunch of different stuff: Melanie's theory about Pinterest, Christmas with little ones (newsflash: our kids aren't really "little ones" anymore), TV shows that make us paranoid, holiday treats, my ongoing eyelash issues (and Melanie's solution), and our observations about overly familiar customer service. So basically we just ramble, but since we recorded this one on December 21, VOILA: CHRISTMAS PODCAST.

Also, for some reason my Mississippi accent is real strong this time around. I watched Steel Magnolias the night before, and apparently it triggered some dormant speech patterns. I say this because there's a point when I pronounce "our" like "ire," so I hope you folks from other parts of the country don't require a translator.

Merry Christmas, y'all. So grateful for you!

As is our usual tendency, Melanie and I recorded this podcast without anything even remotely resembling a plan. We talked about all sorts of stuff, though: Thanksgiving, Christmas, college football, TV, beauty products, and Melanie's preoccupation with a youthful eyebrow.

I had no idea that a youthful eyebrow was even a thing. Suffice it to say that I got me an eyebrow education.

Also, I had my microphone too close to me, so occasionally there is some popping. I'm just as sorry as I can be. But if there weren't at least one technical snafu per podcast, it wouldn't be us. Or I guess it would be a professional version of us, and I think we all know that we don't really operate that way.

Hope y'all enjoy it!

This time around we talk about rugs (seriously. rugs), old youth group skits, air travel, why we're at the mercy of dentists, teacher conferences, movies (and how Gravity seems to be a really big deal), pasta (and also cheese), our deep, heartfelt enthusiasm for Les Miles, and who knows what else.

So, to sum up: we're all over the place. But what else is new?

I'm not gonna lie. We're not quite as high-energy in this one. Why, you wonder? Because we were tired. Melanie had a big weekend cheering for her Aggies, and I got way too invested in Sunday night's Miss America pageant - which left me a little on the drowsy side come Monday. Even still, we cover some of our favorite topics: college football, TV (specifically, why I did not enjoy Breaking Bad), Miss America, eyelashes, skin issues, more football, etc.

Hope y'all enjoy!

Well, Melanie and I decided to record this podcast on a Tuesday afternoon whim, and as always, we had no plan, no rhyme, no reason. We did, however, have some thoughts about Justin Timberlake, John Mayer's new album (Ben Rector's, too), the Ben Affleck-as-Batman brouhaha, why I liked Argo, college football, and Candy Crush.

It's all very academic. SCHOLARLY, you might say.

Well, I'm afraid that we've hit an all-time podcasting low in terms of our topics. Because we discuss all manner of mundane matters. There's weather, feet, postpartum, the African dust storm (I had no idea this was even a thing), more weather, pajamas, college football - and that's not even the half of it. We even managed to work salads into the conversation.

I'm not gonna lie. If you make it all the way through this one, it's probably because you're a relative.

Nonetheless, we're just as tickled as we can be that we have recorded and lo, even posted our fourth podcast of the summer. This is surely some sort of record.

Melanie's roof is being replaced in this particular podcast, but we didn't let it stop us. Well, we didn't let it stop us until it sounded like someone was about to fall through Melanie's ceiling. And at that point, we stopped.

Though not necessarily in that order.

Well, well, well.

Will wonders never cease?

It's been one year (to the day) since our last podcast, but the stars aligned and the computers behaved and the connections stabilized and we actually recorded some new content.

As always, we feature some very sophisticated topics: Miss Mississippi, the new Dallas, hermit crabs, dermatologist visits, expressions that get on our nerves, The Bachelorette, Mad Men, and so much more.

You might want to pace yourself as you listen, especially considering that we've been averaging a podcast a year. So if you play about 5 minutes a month between now and next June, you should be all up to speed by the time we record episode 23 in 2013.

Oh, we are pitiful.

Also, you should probably be aware that I sound like I'm verrrry far away for the first fifteen or twenty seconds, but it gets much better after that. Apparently it took me a minute to make the final adjustments to my microphone, which is hardly surprising considering what a well-oiled broadcasting machine we're operating. Really, we're just a hair shy of talking to each other on CB radios. And truth be told, that might be easier.

But please do enjoy.

Right after I'd consumed two very strong cups of coffee.

So I'm a little bit WOUND UP, and for that I do apologize.

The good news is that this particular podcast is a total hodge podge of topics; we go from accents to The Bachelorette to politics to music videos to fashion to pageants and even more stuff that I can't remember.

So all that to say: if you enjoy random, WELCOME HOME.

And please excuse the animal growls that will assault your ears out of nowhere about 30 minutes into the festivities. I was having a little editing issue, but I finally gave up on fixing it and just inserted some growling sounds. It's just like they do on all those fancy national radio shows. Only THEY WOULD NEVER.

We are oh-so-delighted to have our buddy Travis aka FryDaddy with us on episode 16 of the podcast (2 years, 16 podcasts - clearly we are very prolific). And basically what we have this time around is a run-down of reality shows (including why we've given up on The Real Housewives of New Jersey), an itemized list of our summer TV plans, a thorough analysis of our sleeping issues AND a whole lot of discussion about how STINKIN' PROUD we are of Travis and his new CD. Add it all up and you have a big ole platter of our usual brand of random topped off with a sizable dollop of sarcasm. And we do hope you enjoy it.

Sometimes we decide to record a podcast because we want to talk about some specific things. Today we recorded a podcast because I had been in the kitchen all day long and wanted to pursue some sort activity that didn't require mixing a softened stick of butter with sugar. And Mel wanted to do something that wasn't watching the same episode of "Friday Night Lights" for the third time in a row. I'm telling you: sometimes boredom will just propel you into all manner of podcasting ambition. Anyway, this one is completely random (SO WHAT ELSE IS NEW?). We talk about my search for a birthday gift for my sister-in-law, our mutual disdain for coconut, Mel's hunt for a maxi-dress and how her shopping habits eerily resemble a woman I know who likes to sign cards and letters like this: Love, Mother "Martie." It's all very big fun. As long as you remember that the words "very," "big" and "fun" are completely relative.

At this point in our podcasting careers we're pretty similar to a white sale at your favorite department store: a SEMI-ANNUAL EVENT. And truth be told, I'm not entirely sure what we talk about in this episode, though it seems like John Hughes movies and breakfast foods came up an awful lot. Not to mention our respective addictions to Pathwords, a game that I'll be playing just as soon as I hit "publish" on this bad boy. So we hope you sort of enjoy this. Just like we sort of record podcasts from time to time, then sort of publish them when the mood strikes. Because we? ARE PROFESSIONALS. In the absolute least professional sense of the word. Merry Christmas, y'all.

Okay. We recorded this last week. And it took a sweet forever to get it edited and uploaded and whatnot because we forgot to record an ending, so then we had to go back and record an ending, and then we chased about four hundred rabbits when we recorded the ending, so I decided to just tack on all that stuff, too, because SWEET MERCY, HAVEN'T THE SIX OF YOU WHO LISTEN TO THESE THINGS WAITED LONG ENOUGH?

So besides that, I really don't know what else to say. Except that Travis does an imitation of Neil Diamond that makes Melanie and me laugh until we wheeze. And we talk about American Idol and NASCAR and our ongoing sound issues and the songs Travis sang in 8th grade chorus. We also answer some of your questions (thanks for those, internets), repeat some stories we've told before (JUST LIKE YOUR GREAT UNCLE LARRY! ONLY NOT!) and laugh sort of an obnoxious amount. You should expect no less.

Also: Travis wants the whole world to know that HE PLANTED SOME TREES.

Hallelujah and amen.

Now you may feel like we hardly ever podcast anymore. But the the truth of the matter is that we record plenty of podcasts, but we don't necessarily post them because, well, they're lame. Or the sound's even worse than usual. Or we were interrupted 421 times by preschoolers who wanted juice or Goldfish or whathaveyou while we were trying to record.

This week, however, we're actually posting the WHOLE ENTIRE THING. Even though the sound's still sort of bad because Big Mama and FryDaddy couldn't hear me, but I could hear them fine, so I had to turn up my sound output, only on the podcast I'm VERY, VERY LOUD and they're not as loud, only I wasn't trying to be loud, and IS THERE AN A/V PERSON IN THE HOUSE?

Also: we laugh a sort of obnoxious amount at things that probably aren't particularly funny. However, we're always happy to cast on the pod with our buddy FryDaddy, who has all sorts of great perspective about American Idol and also manages not to SCREAM HIS HEAD OFF when Big Mama and I go ON and ON and ON about a pair of fab wedge sandals.

We also talk about music we loved in high school, Christy Nockels (SHOCK. SURPRISE.), our favorite AI moments of years' past and our NCAA tourney picks, despite the fact that I had a devil of a time locating my bracket online.

It is also worth noting that Big Mama and I managed to record an entire podcast without mentioning our hair. Clearly the Lord has done a special work in our hearts.

And seriously, thanks for your patience with our sound limitations. Big Mama and I would like to tell you that we're diligently working on our sound ish-ahs behind the scenes, but the truth of the matter is that we're pretty much flying by the seat of our pants. However, when we are flying by the seat of our pants, we try to wear pants that are sassy. Because that's important to us when podcasting.

This is our first podcast with A Very Special Guest Star.

Ladies and gentlemen, Travis Cottrell.

{wild applause}

{and also, quite a bit of woo-hoo'ing}

And while you might think that Big Mama and I tried to be all subdued and professional and calm during this podcast, you would be wrong. Travis, God love him, had to listen to a great deal of Talk About Dresses that I edited out, but we were kind enough to not drag him into some sort of discussion about our hair. That would have been cruel and unusual punishment indeed.

However, we do talk about The Office, Angela's Legendary Jeans, and the fact that my town is about to get a fancy new department store.

I know. Travis was probably screaming on the inside, desperately pleading with God for one of us to PLEASE TALK ABOUT FOOTBALL.

And if the beginning of the podcast sounds disjointed, that's because it is. You will think, "I don't believe they mentioned that before," and you will be right. I had to do some serious editing to the very beginning because of all our talking and rambling and rambling some more, but after about five minutes, the narrative structure will be CRYSTAL CLEAR, my friends.

Or not. But still. We can pretend.

And once we get going, the three of us spend a lot of time on the internets' (great and oh-so-fun) questions; there's all sorts of cool info about how Travis and Angela met, what happened when they went to American Idol, and how Travis started doing ministry with that girl named Beth who has written some Bible studies and EVEN SOME BOOKS, Y'ALL. They say she speaks, too, but I'm not sure that I believe them.

We didn't get through all the questions - not by a long shot - and that is why we've already planned a part 2. And a part 3. Because for Big Mama and me, this whole process has been like finding a brother we never knew we had.

And for Travis, this whole process has been like finding two sisters he's not entirely sure he wants. Because he has plenty of real sisters already. And Big Mama and I can be a little loud.

Oh, it is a precious time.

Well, after a six week-ish hiatus, Big Mama and I return to the wonderful world of podcasting by covering a completely random array of topics for your listening pleasure. And we use the word "hiatus," by the way, to make it seem like our podcasting break was TOTALLY PLANNED, but the fact of the matter is that we just never got around to recording anything because we were too busy eating cakes and watching TV. We also did a good bit of sleeping. This week we talk about Big Mama's hair woes, our teenage fondness for writing notes in church, how chocolate chip cookie dough and Cheetos can completely derail parenthood, blog-related Google searches that crack us up, our deeply academic appreciation for the Old Testament, and why you wouldn't want either one of us to ever be in charge of starting some sort of fire. In short, it's the least entertaining entertainment that the interweb has to offer. Which makes us understandably proud. And I'll go ahead and warn you that I had some microphone ish-ahs on this podcast, so I apologize in advance for the technical difficulties. You can rest assured that I will work tirelessly to fix those ish-ahs just as soon as I can tear myself away from my Dairy Queen chicken tenders. My, they are tasty. And as always, we thank you for your patronage.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you. We have actually recorded and posted podcasts TWO WEEKS IN A ROW. Because we're givers, people. And as such we are giving you yay, even MORE unstructured, unorganized ramblings from the two of us. We like to think it's the Christmas gift that keeps on giving. Whether you want it or not. This week we talk about what music we've listened to the most over this last year and thereby remove any remaining doubt in regard to our complete and utter lack of coolness. We also have a (way too long) discussion about celebrities who we'd like to invite to a dinner party, we speculate about why Anthropologie tries to be so edgy, and then we cap off the podcast action with some stellar observations about being a Southern girl. In short, it's yet another laugh-an-hour episode filled with the first-rate mediocrity you've come to expect from us. Is it just me, or does that title sound like a Star Wars movie? Anyhoo. What you've got here in episode 7 is a SUPER-SIZED podcast, a combination of the one we recorded right before Thanksgiving and the one we recorded a couple of days ago. Which means there is nothing even remotely resembling narrative structure. But then again, we never really had that before, even when we tried. So you should feel right at home. And what topics do we cover? Well, we spend a lengthy amount of time discussing Big Mama's hair (seriously, it is a WONDER - I'm thinking of erecting a memorial stone in its honor because it is a testimony to God's love and faithfulness), various and sundry perfumes we have worn through the years, recent college football coaching changes (OH, WE CAN'T HELP IT), Big Mama and Gulley's annual Christmas shopping extravaganza and last but not least, our pregnancy weight gains. Or in Big Mama's case: pregnancy "weight gain." Not to mention that Alex reminds Big Mama that he knows how to shake his bootie. He is his mama's child. http://bigmama1.com http://boomama.net

However, if you ask me, Miss Caroline definitely has a broadcasting career in her future. If she can just get over all that crippling shyness. We also talk about how we met our husbands, the joys of childbirth, the greatness that is chunky jewelry, and our upcoming hey-we-finally-get-to-see-each-other-in-person weekend. You know, the weekend when we're going to make Shannon podcast with us. Because it's fun. Also, we would love it if y'all would be so kind as to send us some new podcast questions seeing as how the six podcasts we've posted and the five podcasts we haven't posted have pretty much left us bone dry in terms of material.
